Deuteronomy 8-10
Deuteronomy 8:3 (KJV) 3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. God lets us endure things that we will turn to Him and know He is our salvation. He is our bread. We take God for granted when everything is good, so there must be hard times for us to know how much we need Him. We must be in the position of need to see that only God can do what only God can do.
