Malachi
God knows the choices we will make and He has chosen us by the choices we make. Malachi 1: 2 I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob, 3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. This is not about individuals but the peoples that bear the name. Those who bear the name of Jacob benefit from the choices Jacob made and the choosing of God of Jacob because of those choices. Esau chose to turn away from Jehovah God, therefore those that bear his name ultimately no longer exist. The truth of choosing between the heart of Jacob, who became Israel and Esau that became the Edomites and no longer exist, is choosing between God and the self.
